St John XXIII Catholic Primary School Inspiring Faith in our Future

Autumn 2

Christmas Fun Day!

The children had a day packed full of Christmas-themed activities, visiting the live nativity - and there was even a special visitor at the end of the day!

Making Advent Wreaths

The Advent wreath is an evergreen wreath with four candles, sometimes with a fifth, white candle in the centre. Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent, the lighting of a candle can be accompanied by a Bible readingdevotional time and prayers. An additional candle is lit on each subsequent Sunday until, by the last Sunday of Advent, all four candles are lit. Some Advent wreaths include a fifth, Christ candle which is lit on Christmas Day.

The Pupil Chaplains worked with Mrs Foran to create beautiful Advent wreaths for our school.

Maths Is Fun!

Adding fractions is a tricky concept, but Year 5 always manage to put a positive attitude towards anything they undertake!

DT - Building Truss Bridges

We've been looking at how engineers and architects design and build bridges - linking this with our learning from Autumn 1 about Forces, we've been learning all about how balanced forces work in everyday life. We've been trying to build our own bridges - using spaghetti and tape - it's not easy!

English - Persuasive Letters

Before writing letters, we need to know what the structure of one looks like. We were tasked with a mixed-up letter - and we had to rearrange it correctly.

Maths - Identifying Equivalent Fractions

The children matched equivalent fractions in a paired task!

Year 5F Class Worship

Year 5F have conducted an assembly all about remembrance. This Sunday marks Remembrance Sunday, a nationwide commemoration of the sacrifice the Armed Forces personnel have made for this country throughout history. They explained the symbolism of the poppy and the importance of this day.

Science - Solar System Research

The children have begun their learning on Earth and Space. This week, children used multiple sources - books, National Geographic articles and videos - to find out about the Solar System. The children then created a double page spread on the Solar System - presenting all the facts they have.

DT - Bridges - Researching

The children became structural engineers! We had non-fictional, report style texts about forces, weather and materials. The children then went on to design 'blueprints' for their own bridges - they chose one of the 6 bridge construction types, we discussed measurements and they chose materials to create bridges.

Maths - Fractions

The children engaged with different types of activities to help them revise their learning and consolidate their knowledge of equivalent fractions.

Maths - Tarsia Puzzle

The children engaged with multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000 in a hands-on way by completing a Tarsia puzzle - a Tarsia puzzle creates a shape when you match up the correct answers to the questions.
