St John XXIII Catholic Primary School Inspiring Faith in our Future

Year 5 Class Worship

On Thursday the whole of Year 5 led the school in a Class Worship where we shared what we have been learning about in our humanities topic on The Windrush.

We shared some inspirational stories from the Windrush Generation, their triumphs, troubles and experiences of migrating to the UK during the Windrush era from 1948-1971. We also shared what we have learnt about The Notting Hill Carnival, its origins as an answer to racial intolerance and violence in the late 1950s and its modern day incarnation as a celebration of our diverse and multicultural city.

The children have enjoyed this topic of learning as it truly reflects the history, culture and tradition of our local area. Many of the children have family members who are part of the Windrush Generation and they have enjoyed learning more about the subject from those that lived through it.

Year 5 also shared the song they have been learning in their Music lessons, 'London is the Place for Me' by Calypso legend, Lord Kitchener. Lord Kitchener actually wrote this song while he travelled on The Empire Windrush to the UK in 1948. The song encapsulates all the hopes and dreams of the Windrush Generation and we enjoyed watching BBC footage of Lord Kitchener performing his song as he stepped off The Empire Windrush upon his arrival in Britain.

In the second half of the assembly, the children updated the school and Sister Silvana on all the work they have been doing to become Caritas Ambassadors. Through the Year 5 Refill Shop, we have been working hard to raise money for The Upper Room, a local homeless charity. The children have started a 'Pay it Forward' scheme which allows our customers to donate bottles of body wash and shampoo to The Upper Room, thereby helping to provide the Catholic Social Teachings 'Option for the Poor' and 'Human Dignity' to people in our local community.

Needless to say, Sister Silvana was beyond impressed with all the work Year 5 have been doing and declared all the children worthy Caritas Ambassadors on the spot. The children are now all walking around school displaying their shiny Caritas Ambassador badges with pride.

The children ended their assembly by setting a mission for everyone. The mission being: Before you act, take a moment to think, are we treating everyone with the respect and dignity they deserve?
