St John XXIII Catholic Primary School Inspiring Faith in our Future

Year 1D Gallery

Live Nativity - Thursday 26th November 2020

Today we were visited by a Nativity Farm which was a very exciting part of our preparations for Advent.

We got to see and touch the animals up close!

Topic Experience Day - Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot!

We have had lots of fun learning about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. We spent the day participating in activities that celebrated our learning. We came to school dressed in colourful, bright clothes to celebrate and remind us of fireworks! We learnt about how people celebrate today, with fireworks and sparklers and even constructed our own Houses of Parliament! We had a great day.

Celebrating Black History through Art

We have been exploring the Art work of Alma Woodsey Thomas who was an African-American Expressionist painter. We created our own pieces of Artwork inspired by her, using cotton buds and colourful paints to create a similar effect. Here are some examples of our work!

Remembrance Day - Wednesday 11th November 2020

Today we held a 2 minute silence to remember those who lost their lives fighting in WW1 as well as those who survived during the difficult years. Afterwards, we made our own poppies using our hand printed in red paint.

These formed a part of a whole school display.

RE

In Year 1, the children have been exploring the story of Creation from the book of Genesis. They worked very hard to produce a beautiful class display which recognises the various parts of Creation. Some children also incorporated thank you prayers for their favourite parts of God's beautiful Creation. The children have also been looking at the story of Noah's ark and have recognised some very important characters and symbols within this story. To deepen their understanding of their faith and reflect on their personal relationship with God they also actively participate within weekly collective worship sessions in class.

Reading

In Year 1 we encourage and celebrate reading. We take it in turns to read to our classroom teddy bears. We become tricky word hunters and work hard to spot tricky words in our classroom reading books. We also celebrate our Readers of the Week.
