St John XXIII Catholic Primary School Inspiring Faith in our Future

Spring 1

Imperial War Museum Trip

This term, Year 6 travelled to Lambeth to visit the Imperial War Museum.  We were able to link all of our learning about WWI so far with real artefacts such as weaponry and army uniforms as well as experience a walk through the trenches.  We took part in an activity to help us launch our new topic WWII by becoming documentary crews and filming a mini-documentary about WWII using all of the items on display.  Ask us about WWI or WWIII at home or around school - we are experts!

Declaration of War (not really!)

This term, inspired by our class text Goodnight Mr Tom (set during WWII) and the actual speech that the then UK Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain wrote declaring war against Germany, we wrote our own declarations of war using our most formal style of writing.  We considered our audience, the British public, and carefully selected language including appropriate modal verbs that conveyed we weren't forcing them to agree with war rather that they should out of patriotism for their country.
