St John XXIII Catholic Primary School Inspiring Faith in our Future

EYFS

Our children's handwriting journey begins in EYFS. Throughout the year, fine motor activities are available daily for children to develop the vital muscles needed to comfortably handle a pencil and write at length.

Implements such as paint brushes, chalk and jumbo pencils are provided for children to develop their pencil grip. As they progress, pencil grips are introduced to encourage the children to develop a tri-pod pencil grip. Within the children's daily discrete phonics sessions, they are taught how to form non-cursive letters. Phrases are taught to the children to help them remember how each letter is formed.
